Generalizing Catholics

I overheard these major (and incorrect) generalizations in the Mensa (Wartburg's dining hall) today:

"I thought Lent was something just Catholics did."

[conversation about how a Catholic person the girl knew had 12 kids because they didn't believe in birth control or abortion]
"...but I'm on the pill." "You must not be a devout Catholic then."

Do we take the time to understand each other's faiths and beliefs,
or do we make assumptions,
believe only what we hear in passing,
and generalize?
Can we make God conform to our societal misconceptions?

Can we say that we know if we do not understand?
