day 61 (June 26)
Our super fantastic very musically talented and artistic MAD campers prepared an entire musical in, like, four days.
We used to perform a (somewhat cheesy) Christian musical every summer at Luther Park. It was a long-standing tradition from way before my time that continued through all four of my summers on staff.
We resurrected the musical for MAD camp. (haha, Bible camp humor!) Erin picked out the script ahead of time (thank goodness!), and for all intents and purposes, I directed the show. We all did a TON of work, though, and the finished product was definitely something of which we can all be proud.
- I made a couple of cuts and substitutions to the songs, and we made a few line adjustments to update and make things more relate-able.
- Some speaking parts were memorized, others were just delivered with expert expression and the script open on the table.
- Vocal solos and small groups were mostly memorized, and the groups assisted and blended with each other so well, it was uncanny. Some serious Holy Spirit work going on, people. For reals.
- Set pieces and props were designed, created, and organized by the campers.
- Costumes were carefully selected by campers from the costume cabin. (Foam sword fights were also had, in the selection process.)
- With only a little help from myself and another staff member, four camper guitar players accompanied everyone in all but one song. I was super impressed by this and didn't expect it at all when the week started - such a blessing!
It took a lot of prep work, a fair amount of lost sleep (for me at least), and lots of flying by the seat of our pants,
but we pulled it together.
Through this musical-theater worship service,
we shared how a group of Christian kids at school can make an impact on the people around them,
though it's not always easy,
and it takes lots of time,
and other people may doubt and question.
We can be the salt of the earth, the spice of life.
We can make a difference
We can make a change
We can take the world and make it a better place ...
When we go and show the world the difference Jesus makes.
